STEP FORWARD INTO THE PAST
Imagine yourself arriving on a Viking ship 1200 years ago or so, and the exciting experience of finding new unfamiliar shores. Well, you are not the first visitor, but this might be your first visit and your expectations are high, as the blue islands in the horizon become rugged coast lines with green hilly slop es and small villages. You arrive in Tórshavn, and even if we boast of being one of the smallest capitals in the world, it looks surprisingly big, spreading like a colourful fan from the bustling harbour up the surrounding hillsides. On a small peninsula, Tinganes, in the middle of the modern harbour, you step back in time and walk among small, tarred houses to the site of our Viking-time parliamentary Ting. You are on Streymoy, the biggest of the Faroese Islands, which is an island of contrasts with 40% of the population living in the largest urban area in the south against the tiny villages up north. Around Streymoy you will find the small islands Koltur, Hestur and Nólsoy. There is plenty to see and do. Tórshavn has museums, cultural events and city life, while sightseeing by bus and boat takes you to the important sights and other islands. There is sea-angling from Tórshavn and Vestmanna, or salmon and trout fishing in Leynar and Saksun. The famous bird cliffs are reached by boat from Vestmanna. And the ancient cairned tracks make satisfying hikes from village to village.
