WHAT TO SEE

Arriving in Skopun with the ferry from Gamlarætt on Streymoy, you can drive to Sandur, the area with more sand and beach than the other islands. Visit Skálavík on Sandoy's east-side to see the 202 m high promontory Skalhøvdi, south of the village. Drive to the village Dalur, which lies at the bottom of a relatively large valley. From here you can walk to the southern tip of the island and enjoy the sight of the bird cliffs »Skorin«. Experience Skarvanes on the island’s westcoast. Skarvanes means »foreland of cormorant«. Here you can see the old, preserved water-mill, which was used for milling grain. Kyriusteinur is the holy stone where people leaving the village in old days would turn around and mumble »Kyrie eleison«, which is Greek for »Lord, have mercy upon us«. Then they would throw a small stone over their shoulder before continuing. For more information about routes where to find sights, please contact the Tourist Information
