YOU WILL NEVER WALK ALONE
Norðoyggjar (the Northern Isles) is the term used to describe the six islands, Fugloy, Svínoy, Viðoy, Borðoy, Kunoy and Kalsoy, which make up the north-eastern corner of the Faroe Islands. These six northern islands are very different and each has its own distinctive character. Here you will find a dramatic countryside and idyllic villages. Some of the largest puffin colonies are to be found here together with millions of guillemots, kittiwakes, razorbills and petrels. The remote islands of Fugloy and Svínoy are connected to Klaksvík by ferry. Sail to the islands on the picturesque mail boat Másin, whatever the weather. These kinds of boat were featured in the Lonely Planet Guidebook, much to everyone’s delight and amazement.
Another possibility to reach these two islands is to take a helicopter and see some of the islands from above. The main town of the northern isles is Klaksvík. It is the most important fishing port in the Faroe Islands with a hypermodern fishing fleet and all the comforts of a modern town. The island of Borðoy is connected to the island Eysturoy by a subsea tunnel. This tunnel is decorated by the famous Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson and driving through it, you will see different colours of light shining on the tunnel wall.
