THE FAROESE WOOL

According to an old Faroese saying "Wool is the gold of the Faroes". From the Viking age and up to this century, wool products have been of major importance for the subsistence of the islands. Knitting has always been a national hobby and fashion staple. Young designers hope to transform the traditional handicraft into an art. Fashionable clothing and accessories, made of wool, are sold in many shops. In the past, each hamlet, and even families, had their own knitting pattern. According to historians, the knitting pattern, dreadfully, helped the families to identify their men lost at sea. All around the islands, there are small boutiques and workshops, where it is possible to buy clothing made of wool.
