The Viking settlers established their own parliament called "Tingið" around year 800. The Faroese parliament has its domicile at Tinganes in Tórshavn. In 1816, the Faroes were turned into a Danish County. The Danish Governor was now the highest authority in the Faroes. An independence movement began early in the 20 and grew stronger the following decades. After the British´occupation of the Faroes during World War II, a return to status quo seemed impossible, and the Faroes acquired home-rule. The Faroes have their own flag, called "Merkið". The islands are not a member of the European Union and all trade is governed by special treaties with the EU. Foreign trade Foreign trade is important for the islands. The most important trading partners are Denmark, Norway and the United Kingdom. Over 90% of the merchandise exports are fish products. The imported goods consist of a wide range of consumer goods, goods for production and investment goods.
